my name is kerry russell and this is why i started the start-up lawyer
I am an intellectual property and technology lawyer. I have worked in law for around 15 years and qualified as a solicitor in 2013.
I grew up in a pretty normal working class family, and from a young age I decided I was going to be lawyer. So after graduating with my maths degree, in 2006, I took a risk. I went to a bank, took out a loan (on top of my student debt) and spent the next 3 years studying law, whilst working full-time to support myself.
After years of persistence, I finally managed to get a job with a law firm to train to become a solicitor. I qualified in 2013, and began practising intellectual property and tech law for the next 9 years.
In 2020, just a few months into the Covid-19 global pandemic, I moved to Yorkshire. To make new connections, I spent time doing pro-bono, drop-in sessions for local start-ups. And that’s where my new journey began.
Whilst I was helping lots of new start-ups on a pro-bono basis, my advice could only go so far. I couldn’t really draft key documents for these new businesses, unless I signed them up as a client, which meant charging for the work I did. It was frustrating. I saw that, despite the abundance of passionate and talented entrepreneurs in the UK working on all sorts of exciting new technologies, fundamental legal services were just not accessible for start-ups.
This was how I wanted to help. I also had a desire to run my own business, and I saw where I could add real value. So in 2022, I set up The Start-UP Lawyer.
