IP may be licensed from a third party into your business, or from your business out to a third party. Essentially a licence is a permission – and in the case of IP, it is permission to use IP in a specific way, as agreed between the parties.
Licences may be straightforward, with a fixed fee and a fixed term. Or they may be more complicated, with royalties paid on the basis of quarterly profits, with a term that is automatically renewed.
